gave the sermon. Other bishops present were: McCarthy of Halifax, Morrison of Antigonish, Barry of Chatham, LeBlanc of St. John, Pratt of Kingston and Bruchesi of Montreal. 14
Bishop O'Leary arrived in Charlottetown on the evening of May 27 aboard the steamer "S.S. Northumberland" en route from Pictou. The wharf and Great George Street all the way to the pro-cathedral (site of the present Basilica Recreation Centre) was thronged with people and the entire route of the procession was beautifully illu- minated with electric lights and decorated with strings of bunting. The new bishop was met at the wharf by a number of societies, including the B.I.S., the A.O.H., the C.M.B.A., the K. of C. and League of the Cross, along with a couple of bands. Among those accompanying the bishop was his brother, Rev. Dr. Louis O'Leary
of Chatham. 15
The installation took place the same evening at the pro-cathe- dral on Richmond Street before a crowded church which included some thirty priests and a number of dignitaries. It was estimated that scarcely one—fifth of the congregation was able to gain entrance to the church. The installation was a simple ceremony with apparently no other bishops being present. The papal bulls were read regarding the new bishop's appointment, following which addresses were made, including one from the clergy read by Msgr. James Phelan, administrator of the diocese, who mentioned in par- ticular that the diocese here had been an orphan for the past 3 1/2 years. Pontifical Benediction terminated the ceremony at which Judge Blanchard was choir director and Mrs. Byron Brown the organist. Following the installation, the scene moved to St. Anthony's Villa which was serving as the temporary residence for both the bishop and the cathedral clergy while repairs to the fire and water—damaged "palace" were underway. At the Villa the bishop was accorded a magnificent ovation from the large crowd assem- bled. Mayor Lyons read an address of welcome on behalf of the citizens. A reception followed at which people of all denomina— tions had the pleasure of being introduced to the young bishop. 16
