centre aisle, a beautiful rose window from Munich, Germany high above the main altar and a building that this time was supposed to be fireproof. 17 Another building project to occupy the new bishop's mind, at the same time as the rebuilding of the cathedral, was the addition of a three-storey wing to the west side of the bishop's residence which necessitated some structural changes to the existing house's interi¬ or. To a great extent the new annex was intended as a convent for the day when sisters would be available to take charge of the domestic duties of the large residence. Soon after arriving on thelsland Bishop O'Leary began seek¬ ing a religious order of men to settle in the diocese. He turned first to the Trappists in Ireland, but Abbot Phelan of Abbey, Cappoquin, County Waterford had to say no to the bishop's request toward the establishment of a Trappist (Cistercian) founda¬ tion here. At least, he regretted, he was not able at this time. 18 Next the bishop attempted to entice the Basilian Fathers , a teaching order with headquarters in Toronto , to come here. There was the bright prospect of establishing a juniorate or novitiate in Morell at the old Sinnott farm. They would prefer to set up in the country and appeal especially to poorer rural boys, getting their fair share of P.E.I , priestly vocations. When this plan failed to go, there was a move to setting up the Basilians at St. Paul's in Summerside which was a prosperous parish of 300 families in a town of 3000 people. The bishop foresaw this as a mission house with the need for four priests, one of whom would be French speaking. 19 This project, however, also failed to see the light of day, mainly because of a change of leadership and direction within the Basilian Order at that time.
