Edmonton there were 8,000 Catholics of whom 6,000 were English speaking. Lack of religious practice and general disarray in this portion of his flock was quite shocking. He mentioned an early visit to the University of Alberta which had 1600 students, of whom 200 were Catholics "losing their faith as fast as they can". After only a week on the scene the new archbishop is already speaking about enormous problems that are crowding in on him thick and fast, so much so that those in Prince Edward Island appear to him now as child's play. 32
Almost immediately the young archbishop begins an appeal to various bishops for English—speaking priests and students. Naturally his thoughts turned first to Prince Edward Island, a wealthy seed bed of priestly vocations. Still, two Island natives, Bishop McNally of Calgary and Archbishop Sinnott of Winnipeg, were also in search of English priests at the same time. Would there be enough for all? Before long there began a trickle and then a steady stream of P.E.I. priests to the side of their former bishop. First off the mark was Father James Charles McGuigan of Hunter River. Ordained only two years, he had served the first year as professor at St. Dunstan's and the second as secretary to Bishop O'Leary in Charlottetown. In 1920 he accompanied his bishop to Edmonton and was soon placed in positions of high calling: chan- cellor, 1922—1925; Vicar general, 1923-1930; rector of St. Joseph's Cathedral, 1925-1927; rector of St. Joseph's Seminary, 1927—1930. In 1930 he was named archbishop of Regina and at age 35 was probably the youngest in the world at the time. 33 In 1935 he was named archbishop of Toronto and in 1946 became Canada's first
English cardinal. He died in 1974.
All the others, except one, were ordained directly for the arch- diocese of Edmonton and along with the year of their ordination and native parish were as follows:
1921: Alfred MacIntyre, Corran Ban (died 1965) 1922: Henry Duffy, Fort Augustus (d. 1966) 1922: Peter Hughes, Kinkora. He was ordained for the Diocese
