Of the twelve bishops serving the Diocese of Charlottetown over the past 166 years, two were brothers: Henry and Louis O'Leary from New Brunswick who led the Island Church, one fol- lOwing the other, from 1913 to 1930. Both became bishops at an early age -- in their mid-thirties -- and both died young, while still in their fifties.

The two bishops O'Leary had the privilege of a well-rounded education, each having a term of years at the great universities of Rome, in addition to venerable halls of learning in Canada. Much talented, they were leaders in differing styles, with Henry being . promoted to archbishop of Edmonton. Their time on Prince Edward Island was one of expansion throughout the Diocese of

Charlottetown, with lasting monuments to their memory. This booklet is a feeble attempt to recall one small slice of our diocesan history under the leadership of these New Brunswick brothers, the

O'Learys two.

Father O'Shea is a priest of the Diocese of Charlottetown. His other published writings include IT HAPPENED IN IONA (1991)

and AH. BURKE (1993). -
