a log structure in Orwell Cove as early as 1804, conducted by Dr. MacAulay , a former Army chaplain, but it was not until 1823, that the first minister, Rev. John MacLennan arrived."2 "The late Rev. John McLennan , the principal part of whose congregation was at Belfast , was the first minister who regularly preached at Orwell. Before gospel ordinances were dispensed in this place, the first settlers would walk each Sabbath to Belfast Church to hear preaching, a distance of six and even seven miles through the blazed forest and back the same day, and think nothing of it. What do you think of this, ye moderns who are lazy on the Sabbath! The late Rev. Donald McDonald had been about three years on the Island before he visited this settlement. He first preached at Orwell about the year 1833. This very large church, a credit to the place, was the headquarters to his people residing to the East of the Hillsborough River . His remains lie here, with a magnificent monument over him to mark the spot. After Mr. McDonald 's death, Rev. Mr. McColl laboured here for a few years. The Rev. Mr. Goodwill now minister to them with very much acceptance."3 Upon completion of his survey, Holland divided the Island into three counties. These three counties were marked as having a point of harbour, which would be the most central part of it, and have easiest access to the interior. They were known as Georgetown , Port La Joie, and Princetown . Each county was divided again into twenty-thousand-acre portions, which were named lots. This division of land continued until our Island was divided into sixty-seven townships or lots.
