"In the first settling of Orwell, bears were very numerous. Very frequently by night, the settlers would be awakened by the squealing of pigs, the bellowing of cattle, and the cries of other domestic animals being killed by bears near their dwellings.

Mrs. W. Gillis had two bear cubs on her roof looking at her through the hole in the roof that allowed smoke out from the fire. The mother bear was outside the house trying to get her cubs down. Towards morning the little children began to cry, and the cubs taken fright hurried off to their home in the woods."5
