a mixture of mud and grass between sticks with the ends of the each crossing those of the other like the walls of a small log house. This formed the funnel aperture to draw off the smoke. Around this primitive and odd fire place, marched the monarch of the birchen rod sceptre with as much dignity over his mud floors as ever did the commodore of a large fleet, over his quarter deck."20 The materials used in constructing the first school later became part of the main barn of B.J. McDonald and when it was dismantled by his son Newman, the materials were used for a third time. Ink wells, or what remained of them, were found when the original school lot was ploughed. In 1856, the establishment of the normal school for the training of teachers brought about an advance in education. The Prince of Wales College was established in 1860. Teachers were better trained, more subjects were added to the curriculum, and books suitable to the various grades became available. On April 22, 1884, the Orwell Cove School District #131 was drawn up. "In Queen's County commencing on the shores of on the line dividing the farm of Angus Nicholson and Donald Nicholson then running to the rear of said farms. Then North Easterly along main road to the line dividing the land of Neil Gillis from that of Alexander Anderson , then South East to the rear line of Neil Gillis farm, then Easterly to line of Neil Gillis , D. Gillis , and Roderick MacLean (or McLeod) and then to the road from Orwell Cove to Upper Newtown , then South West to the said to the line of John M. Grant 's farm then East along the lines of Orwell Cove to the to land owned by Donald McLeod then to the Orwell River to , thence to place of commencement."21 The boundaries of Orwell North and Orwell Cove were separated in 1894 due to overcrowding.
