ORGANIZATIONS The Orwell Cove Women's Institute was organized in July, 1926, with Mrs. Wilfred MacLean as president, and Miss Isabel MacEachern as secretary. The motto was "Home and Country." The annual fee was 25 cents. The Institute was one of the most organized groups in the district. Meetings were held on a monthly basis on the second Thursday. Their main project was working and caring for the school and pupils. Some of this work entailed painting, inside and out, placing of school signs, new desks graded according to the size of the pupils, window blinds, water fountains, paper cups, towels, etc. They visited the school monthly with a treat of fudge for the teacher and pupils. They were always welcome visitors. This was hard work after the smoky stove all winter. After consolidation came about in 1971, their role changed. This task was taken over by the school unit janitors. During the war years 1939-1945, the Women's Institute members knitted socks and mitts to send to soldiers through the . Included in the care packages were cigarettes, fruit cakes, etc. Nearly every woman in the district belonged to the Women's Institute. Meetings were a happy occasion to get together to discuss mutual topics, exchange household hints, recipes, etc. Many of these dear ladies have since passed on. We wish to pay them this tribute from the Womens Institute Newsletter of September 1993. In Memoriam We never lose the ones we love For even though they're gone, Within the hearts of those who care Their memory lingers on. The farmers in the area joined together in 1913 to organize and establish the Orwell Cove Farmers' Institute. The creed which they followed was "Farmers Assisting Farmers". The founding 50
