had its ups and downs. There was a lot to be learned about pigs. An important factor necessary for healthy pigs was good quality air. One year when there was a poor grain crop they fabricated a potato cooker to steam cull potatoes to feed the pigs. When William, the oldest son, finished his schooling, he and Gerrit began growing potatoes. It was always Gerrit's wish to grow potatoes since he had grown them on his father's farm in Holland. In 1980, a potato warehouse was built on the highway on the corner of the property formerly owned by Tom and Stanley Morrison. Weitze and Doetje Visser Weitze and Doetje emigrated from the province of , Holland. They arrived in Halifax on May 13, after crossing the on the ship, Shubayak. They lived in a very small house in Bunbury before moving to Orwell Cove , where they settled in the house previously owned by Matilda and Elizabeth MacPherson at Douse . It was a big adjustment because it had no electricity or running water, unlike their home in Holland. They not only had to adjust to their new home and surroundings, but also to their new school. While the Visser children attended Orwell Cove school, they mastered the English language and became comfortable with their new community.
