20 "Do the Next Thing". (On a Sun-dial) Winds from the South bring a promise of rain: at certain seasons they are accompanied by hoar frost. South-east winds are cool or cold, bringing snow or driving rain. This wind has a trick, at times, of jumping back to N.W ., without hauling sunwise. The East wind brings rain or snow. The North-east wind begins lightly and usually works into heavy moist snow in winter. The North wind, while rather boisterous, is not so cold as the N.W . wind. The Nor'wester is at first strong, with drift; then calmer with blue sky, and sun in the day; and cold at night. THE LENGTH OF OUR DAY Time as an abstract study is not an easy subject, but our pioneering forefathers simplified and reduced it to three periods : sunrise when their work began; then when the shadow touched the "noon-mark" on the floor or window-sill, annonuced the prin¬ cipal meal of the day; and last, when sunset closed the hours of toil, The "noon-nnrk" was not infallible, for the sun and the clock do not at all times agree. At noon on Nov. 4th, for instance, the sun is ahead of the clock time by 16 min. 22 sec, while on Feb. 12th it has fallen behind the clock by 14 min. 24 sec. However, four times in the year the sun-dial and clock do agree: viz., at noon on Dec. 25, April 16, June 14, and Sept. 1st. Our Province is under Standard Time and the fol¬ lowing tables of Sunrise and Sunset are based upon it. They are for Latitude 46 deg. North; for Georgetown add 11 minutes and for Charlottetown add 12.
