Wednesday, March 29, 1967 worthwhile." So he looked over the paper. No he said, "I am not going to do it." But anyway I went back with the assurance from the Minister of Welfare and he said to tell him to sign his name and that's all that there would be to it. So that is what I said, "Sign your name regardless and that's all that will be to it." I hope that will be the case, Sir . Anyway here we have the situation, the unhappy situation and it is unhappy because down through the years since this Old Age Pension started our elderly people have been placed on the auction block every election. May I ex¬ press the hope when another election is called those dear, elderly people will be able to say we are not once more placed on the auction block at election time. And here we have again those true words come back to us when we have all of this in mind. "Thou art weighed in the balance and the poor dear old people are found wanting." I sincerely hope the time will come that they in turn will receive the remuneration that was promised them. I don't think they have received it as yet, but may I express the hope that it will work out all right whether the Province of Prince Edward Island can stand it or not. Now I don't know if there is anything more here. Walter R. Shaw : Did you read it all? Frank Myers : I did and I read it, and read it a good many times and there is only one thing in it that I can see and where is it. "A policy for seasonal licenses for trucks will be implemented by my Government this year." That, Mr. Speaker , is a step in the right direction — more especially during the last two or three years. All of those promises they were not made to be delayed immediately, so on and so forth like that. But the reason that I would like very much to see those — this one especially carried out — is due to the fact that with the high cost of potato pickers coining over here especially from the Mainland. The ma¬ jority just come over to have a good time. We might as well admit that: I mean the majority of them. And the farmers had to pay $1.26 an hour so they then re¬ sorted to large machinery and what does this big machinery cost? It is very expensive and then the farmers in the fall for just about six weeks, possibly two months, will pick up an old dump truck and put a potato box on it and that will do them for | just hauling potatoes from the digger to the bin. Mr. Speaker , speaking about ex¬ pensive machinery. The outfit that dug my son's potatoes last fall amounted to— you may not believe this but it is true, Mr. Speaker — $22,960.00. Three tractors, an escalator, a combine and two potato boxes. Now that is just for digging potatoes aloae clear of planting and working throughout the summer. Now I almost forgot this. I still remember sitting in the seat there, in your place, Sir, and the present Minister of Highways stood up and said, "If this province goes behind year after year with the debt." I think if I remember correctly he pave us six months to be run by s Commission. Surety it wont be that soon, but there is a difficulty and he is a gretty food financier himself, as he was always the chief crHie, financial critic and no doubt a man of his calibre did a lot of studying on that So I am just passing that thought along as a warning to you, Mr. Premier , for com¬ ing from him just a year.... Some Member : (Remark inaudible). Frank Myers : Oh, it must be true, aboslutely true! To give you an idea, Mr. Speaker , how the things have gone, skyrocketted. Back in 1966 the revenue of this province was $9,275,840.00. Just imagine! In 1966. Honourable Alexander B. Campbell : Provincial governmentt Frank Myers : Yes, yes provincial government; well it is the total revenue, Sir . That would mean what came from Ottawa at the same time too. But anyway I am comparing the total revenue just last year of $88344,886. Now just at that the difference the demand that is put on the government today. Is it any wonder that I am deeply concerned and greatly worried about the future of our present Premier. Some Member: Soon be grey, dont you think? Frank Myers : Starting already.
