group has recently been accepted and will get started shortly, when the titles can be cleared. The acreage here will be 800 acres. Finally, in pastures we have had a new area recently accepted for a pasture group in the Poplar Grove area. We have been involved in the partial or total construction of 22 dams during the past year throughout the province and this is under ARDA, Honourable Doctor. The main emphasis was on water conservation but with other possibilities in mind. wildlife, fishing, recreation areas, etc. Our ARDA program was also involved in seminars, in community schools as well as the Tignish Art Foundation. Farm consolidation in a very small way has been recently started under the ARDA progra in also. The Farm Improvement Service was carried on under a special arrangement with ARDA assistance. I want to remind the Honourable Doctor that we gave assistance to the carrot industry in O'Leary also.
L. George Dewar: Good : Glad to hear that. (Applause).
Honourable Daniel J. MacDonald: As well as the Irish Moss industry in that district, this all comes under the same department.
J. David Stewart: You were talking about grassland.
Honourable Daniel J. MacDonald: Grassland, yes I was talking about that for quite a while. (Laughter) Clearing land was on a shared basis and the farmers shared under projects that could be accomplished under this program. Under the program, $1,680.00 was provided.
L. George Dewar: Under Farm Improvement?
Honourable Daniel J. MacDonald: I don't see how we left out O'Leary. L. George Dewar: Under Farm Improvement?
Honourable Daniel J. MacDonald: Yes, covered a period of 27,979 hours. Some Member: Have to work a 24-hour day next year to suit you, I guess.
Honourable Daniel J. MacDonald: The expenditure on this job alone was $413,619.42. There was a wee bit done after all, wasn’t there?
A word about the forestry division. During the winter months all machinery was taken apart, cleaned, parts re laced where necessary, painted and reassembled. I don’t know if this was ever done ore or not, Mr. Leader of the Opposition?
L. George Dewar: You were not using your own equipment, were you? Honourable Daniel J. MacDonald: At what? L. George Dewar: At this Farm Improvement.
Honourable Daniel J. MacDonald: No, Sir, we were not, it was all contract. We have no equipment, if you mean the government?
L. George Dewar: You just said you took the equipment apart.
Honourable Daniel J. MacDonald: Our forestry division. I believe you are sitting too close to Mr. Confusion. (Laughter)
Honourable Robert E. Campbell: Terrible, terrible, to say that. Walter R. Shaw: . . . in the woods?
Honourable Daniel J. MacDonald: I am on forestry now by the way. During the winter months all the machinery was taken apart, cleaned, parts replaced where necessary, repainted and reassembled. Eighty tons of manure were hauled from the Exhibition grounds to the nursery and also one hundred tons of peat moss was hauled from Johnston’s River.
J. David Stewart: How much was hauled from the First District? (Laughter). —-140—
