Legislative 7 Assembly
Walter R. Shaw: I'll be there!
Honourable M. Lorne Bonnell: Also we have, throu h the Department of Mun- icipal Affairs, got them started in Borden under Town P nning so that this whole area, when it is constructed under the causeway, the whole area now comes under Town Planning so that we are not going to have people putting up motels and restaurants, honky-tonks, tents, trailers and so forth on the mam highways coming into our prov- ince. It is retty hard to beautify this area at the present time because it is under con- struction, ut it is under planning so that it can be beautified in the years ahead and we can at some control within some miles of this rt of entry so that it will not be- come a Konky-tonk. At the other port of entry, at ood Islands, we have procured this Island called “Wood Islands" in which the boat comes through, and there is an Island there of 26 acres and we have procured this from American citizens so that we can beautify this Island with shrubs, flowers, plants and grass so that the first impression of our tourists as they arrive at Wood Islands at our Island will be one of beauty, cleanliness, neatness and one for us to be proud of.
Now along with this same Division I have procured the services of a photogra- pher who is taking a picture of all Centennial events, so that it can be recorded for the history of our province, and it can be sent around to the other areas of Canada to entice tourists to come here in future years. May I at this time, Mr. Speaker, tell each and every member of the Assembly if there is an official function of a Centennial nature going on in each of your respective areas w ’ch would be of interest to Prince Edward Island, if you would let my Department know we will send our photographer out and he will put it on a movie and if it turns out well it will be entered into the film “In the History of Prince Edward Islan ” in Canada’s Centennial.
Leo F. Rossiter: Conservative conventions?
Honourable M. Lorne Bonnell: No not Conservative conventions or Liberal eon- ventions, but we will send it out to anything of a Centennial nature in your villa , your communities and we will be very pleased as members of the Le ' lature on ei side are able to take art in these Centennial affairs and to have their icture recorded in the movie of the uture. (Applause) Now along with this same ourist Develop- ment, Mr. Speaker, for several years we, while in 0 position, criticised the former Government on many occasions. I don’t know if they a ways deserved it, perhaps not; but on certain occasions they did.
Walter R. Shaw: See how nice I am to you now.
Honourable M. borne Bonnell: Well I have always been nice to ou, and I am going to be still nicer to you. I know that the Honourable Leader of t 0 Opposition, who was then anier, was doing a job that he thought was good, and he believed in his heart he was doing a good job and he was trying to do a good job, and I still believe as Leader of the Opposition that he is still trying to do a good job. But the trouble was, when he was the Premier he didn’t have any advisors. (Applause).
Walter B. Shaw: I didn’t need any. (Laughter)
Honourable M. Lorne Bonnell: You would have been better off if you had none. (Laughter) Because I would have more faith in you without the advisors than I have with the advisers.
One of the things that I criticised the former Government for was not taking full advantage of ARDA. They told me at that time, “we can’t afford it, we can’t af- ford it." And you know I almost believed them. There was times when I went home and thought, “Perhaps we can’t; we are only a small province and we can’t be taking advantage of ABBA.” But when I got into the Department of Tourist Development I found that approximately $100,000 a year was spent on parks for construction and capital costs and it was paid for with rovincial funds when half of that money should have come to our province through RDA. (Applause) So I immediately made a claim, Mr. Speaker; they did get some through ALRDA on certain new land they bought for a park here and there, but there was a maintenance cost.
Leo F. Rossiter: Get that under development?
Honourable M. Lorne Bonnell: We are gettin it all under ARDA for develop- ment even to the salaries paid to the attendant and t e caretakers of these parks, and
