Legislative Assembly Walter R. Shaw : 111 be there! Han-----**'~ M. Lome Bonnell : Also we have, through the Department of Mun¬ icipal Affairs, got them started in Borden under Town Planning so that this whole area, whan it is constructed under the causeway, the whole area now comes under Town Planning so that we are not going to have people putting up motels and restaurants, honky-tonks, tents, trailers and so forth on the main highways coming into our prov¬ ince. It to pretty hard to beautify this area at the present time because it is under con¬ struction, but it is under planning so that it can be beautified in the years ahead and we can put some control within some miles of this port of entry so that it will not be¬ come a honky-tonk. At the other port of entry, at wood Islands, we have procured this Island Called " Wood Islands " in which the boat comes through, and there is an Island there of 26 acres and we have procured this from American citizens so that we can beautify this Island with shrubs, flowers, plants and grass so that the first impression of our tourists as they arrive at Wood Islands at our Island will be one of beauty, cleanliness, neatness and one for us to be proud of. Mom along with this same Division I have procured the services of a photogra¬ pher who is taking a picture of all Centennial events, so that it can be recorded for the history of our province, and it can be sent around to the other areas of Canada to entice tourists to come here in future years. May I at this time, Mr. Speaker , toll each and every member of the Assembly if there is any official function of a Centennial nature noing on in each of your respective areas which would be of interest to Prince Edwaiaflaland , if you would let my Department know we will send our photographer out and he will put it on a movie and if it turns out well it will be entered into the film In the History of Prince Edward Island " in Canada 's Centennial. Lao F. Rossiter : Conservative conventions 7 BaBonraUe M. Lome BonaeB : No not Conservative conventions or Liberal con¬ vention*; but we will send it out to anything of a Centennial nature in your villages, your coasmunities and we will be very pleased as members of the Legislature on either side are able to take part in these Centennial affairs and to have their picture recorded in the movie of the future. (Applause) Now along with this same Tourist Develop¬ ment, Mr. Speaker , for several years we, while in Opposition, criticised the former Government on many occasions. I dont know if they always deserved it, perhaps not; but on certain occasions they did. Walter R. Shaw : See how nice I am to you now. Honourable M. Lome Bonnell : Well I have always boon nice to you, and I am going ta be still nicer to you. I know that the Honourable Leader of the Opposition, who was then Premier, was doing a job that he thought was good, and he believed in mm job, I his heart he was doing a good job and he was trying to do a good job, and I still believe as Leader of the Opposition that he is still trying to do a good job. But the trouble was, when ho was the Premier he didnt have any advisors. (Applause). Walter R. Shaw : I didnt need any. (Laughter) Honourable M. Lome Bonnell : You would have been better off if you had none. (Laughter) Because I would have more faith in you without the advisors than I have with the advisors. One of the things that I criticised the former Government for was not taking full advantage of ARDA. They told me at that time, "we cant afford it, we can't af¬ ford it" And you know I almost believed them. There was times when I went home and thought, "Perhaps we can't; we are only a small province and we cant be taking advantage of ARDA" But when I got into the Department of Tourist Development I found that approximately $100,000 a year was spent on parks for construction and capital costs and it was paid for with provincial funds when half of that money should have come to our province through ARDA. (Applause) So I immediately made a claim, Mr. Speaker ; they did get some through ARDA on certain new land they bought for a park here and there, but there was a maintenance cost. Leo F. Rossiter : Get that under development? Honourable M. Lome Bonnell : We are getting it all under ARDA for develop¬ ment even to the salaries paid to the attendant and the caretakers of these parks, and
