Legislative Assembly L. George Dewar : . . . this amount was cut out this year. But it sounds rather ominous, and it doesn't sound very fair to the good people of because there are as many people living in as there are in Kings County, although, I lose track every once in a while. I believe there are five Ministers from Kings County. Is that an over-estimate. Some Member : No, I wouldn't say so. L. George Dewar : Fairly close, four anyway. Some Member : That is getting closer. L. George Dewar : Four, and we are represented by the Honourable gentleman opposite us. He has the responsibility, without portfolio, of representing as msmy people in Prince Edward Island in the Cabinet as the four Honourable Gentlemen from Kings County. Honourable Alexander B. Campbell : And he is as good as the four of them. L. George Dewar : I think that is a very unfair burden, a very unfair to place on the Honourable Member who sits over in the corner and doesnt very much. It certainly was not a very fair thing to do, to cut out the appropriation for the Vocational School in , and I think it was also unfair to that Honourable Gentleman, according to the estimates, that all the Member from Kings County got an increase in pay of $3,200.00, while this Minister who does four times as much work, or who has to represent four times as many people only get an in¬ crease in pay of $2,600.00 or $2,700.00. Honourable Alexander B. Campbell : You have been calling him the "Minister of Nothing", so he is deserving nothing. L. George Dewar : Well now, that seems to be the attitude of the Government opposite and I don't think it is fair to the Honourable Member from . I think he should have more consideration. Honourable Alexander B. Campbell : We will enter an amendment to the esti¬ mates. L. George Dewar : You are responsible for calling him the "Minister of Noth¬ ing", you did not give him a Portfolio . He should have had one of the most respon¬ sible portfolios in the Government considering that he was the only representative from that are* with as many people as there are in Kings County. Lo and behold, what do they do? Appoint four Ministers from Kings County, and one Minister without Portfolio from . Some Member : Terrible; Terrible. L. George Dewar : Terrible is right. There is no other word to describe it adequately. That is one item, now, I was going to add up the cost to this Province of electing the present Government. There was the Welfare item of $2,000,000.00, there was the school supply item of $400,000.00, there was an item of $800,000.00 unex¬ plained. Honourable M. Lome Bonnell : What is the $2,000,000.00 of Welfare? L. George Dewar : The bungling in the industrial world that took place coat the Province $900,000.00, so we have a total cost of electing this Government, a cost to the tax-payers of over $4,000,000.00. Honourable M. Lome Bonnell : How much did it cost to keep the other Govern¬ ment? L. George Dewar : We have a Government that comes in with increased re¬ venues. We find them short-changing the Universities, short-changing the Depart¬ ment of Welfare, short-changing the Vocational Education Programme, short-changing the Provincial Paving Program , short-changing Capital Expenditures.
