Thursday, February 29, 1968 Hon . Alexander B. Campbell : Be careful; you are up for the Leadership. Be careful. Frank Myers : That is a suggestion on my part and I sincerely hope, Mr. Speaker , that you will tell the Premier to make that a reality. Hon . Alexander B. Campbell : Take ;t from the farmers. Frank Myers : It would be a little enducement, a little encouragement for our young- people when they are leaving Prince Edward Island , such as the honourable member over there from the Belfast District , his boy has gone away and he did good and which I am very proud indeed to mention this afternoon. Hon . M. Lome Bonnell : Mr. Speaker , just let me get this straight. First, you said it was terrible that we took $1.50 off the twenty-five. After you finished that statement you said take the whole twenty-five. Which do you wish ? I want to get this straight so I can propose something to the government. Frank Myers : Mr. Minister , we will put it this way. Hon . M. Lome Bonnell : I want your support and I want to know which way to go. Frank Myers : You were paying $25.00. Now you have deducted $1.50, which goes to show that you feel just a little wee bit guilty about paying the $25.00. If you were not guilty at all you would still pay the $25.00. That is my interpretation, Sir . Now does that satisfy you ? Hon . M. Lome Bonnell : No, we don't feel a bit guilty in this world, Mr. Speak ¬ er, we carried out our promise to give $100.00 a month to senior citizens. Frank Myers : I realize that point, but in other words then, Mr. Speaker , the Honourable Minister has no regard whatsoever for our young people here in Prince Edward Island . I realize that it was dictating responsibility on them, especially when the Hon . Premier was unable to carry out the Medicare as he promised. To be honest about that, Mr. Speaker , I wonder if that ever should become effective here in Canada , especially in Prince Edward Island . I think that some other form could be worked out so that, for instance, Mr. Speaker , the business establishments here, they have their own schemes and not very costly. They have and I think in all fairness to you, Mr. Premier , I cannot help you on this point because I realize you don't under¬ stand the situation. You're still living away up in that castle built in the air. If you'd only come down and listen. Hon . Alexander B. Campbell : I wonder if the Honourable Member from First Queens would permit a question, Mr. Speaker. Frank Myers: What did you say? What did he say, Mr. Speaker. Hon. Alexander B. Campbell : Would you permit a question? Frank Myers : Yes, sure I don't care. Hon . Alexander B. Campbell : I'm like the Minister of Welfare, I'm confused. We've been listening now to this desperate situation in the Province, the bankruptcy of the farmers and so on. In the last ten minutes you've taken $25.00 a month from all our senior farmers and now your proposing that we shouldn't have Medi¬ care. Is that a correct understanding? Frank Myers : Well, Mr. Speaker , I can put it this way. I wonder when the opportune time will come for our poor dear elderly people when they take them off the auction block. When will that become a reality, Mr. Speaker ? Hon . Alexander B. Campbell : When you become Premier. Frank Myers: Now, that's not answering my question, Sir . How many farm¬ ers, or at least there shouldn't be any, are farming around seventy years old ? LInknown voice: No, they should all be dead. —85—
