Psgislativeéssembly

Now, Mr. Speaker, we come near to the end and I would like to sum up a few of the remarks that have been made in this House at the last Session and before the previous election.

A Royal Commission was appointed to look into the situation in Georgetown. I tried to get the figures of the cost of this Commission but I have not obtained them up to this time, and I afraid those Royal Commissions are a very expensive operation as the “B and B” Royal Commission cost over $7,000,000. But I hope that ours doesn’t cost nearly that much and the only thing that we proved was that a speculator in Central Canada did not make as much money as he expected to. This is the only thing we proved with our Royal Commission.

Now, Mr. Speaker, this new math must be great. I did not have the oppor- tunity when I was going to school to learn the new math, but the new math must be wonderful, because in the last Session of the Legislature the debt of the Prov— ince was stated at $60,000,000. Recently, at a meeting in Souris, two of the Minis- ters of the Government stated the debt now stands at $91,000,000.

Some Member: $99,000,000.

Preston D. MacLure: And a few weeks ago the Honourable Premier came on tele- vision and said the debt now stands at $71,000.000. This is not quite as bad a pic- ture as the ninety—one or the ninety-nine million dollars, but still....$100,000,000 was it? Oh no, you stated at the last Session of the Legislature it was only $60,000,000 and now it stands at $71,000,000. That is eleven million in my figures, Mr. Speaker. Now Mr. Speaker, as I stated in the last Session of the Legislature, we were led to believe before the last election that all we had to do was go to Ottawa and bring the paper money home in bales, and the silver money home in large sacks. I would like to know where this money is today? Another Moses; I thought that we had another Moses coming up.

Some Member: Another Moe?

Preston D. MacLure: No, I think Moe has gone, but Moses is still here. He was going to lead the people out of the wilderness, Mr. Speaker, but we are still in the wilderness.

Now, Mr. Speaker, I read the Guardian yesterday morning, and the headlines looked great. “Nearly $2,000,000 for Charlottetown Airport” and then when you read down in the fine print, Mr. Speaker, when you read down in the finst print Mr. Speaker, this will be spent over a number of years. You would think by the look of the large print at the top that we were going to have the $2,000,000 to spend in the near future, but this is not the case when you read the fine print. When you sign a mortgage, you need to read the fine print to see what you have to pay back each year.

The Agritcultural industry in this province is in great difficulty at the present time and something must be done to assure our farmers that they will be able to plant a crop this spring. They are ignored.

Now, Mr. Speaker, we must have more jobs created in this Province to keep the young people at home in this Province, Mr. Speaker. They do not care to go away any more than any of the rest of us care to leave home. But they are forced to go, they are forced to leave to make a living, Mr. Speaker. We must create jobs, we must put up more plants and create jobs. We talk about management and one thing and another in those plants, Mr. Speaker, if we think the management needs to be replaced, Mr. Speaker, if we think this needs to be done, do it, Mr. Speaker, and open up the plants, put a Board of Directors on, you cannot get a board of impartial directors. So, Mr. Speaker, take three from each side of the House and put them in as Directors and we know in this small province you cannot get six impartial directors. Put it under new management and open up the plants, make jobs, keep the young people at home and give them some money worthwhile for their work.

Now, Mr. Speaker, I would like to give the Provincial Treasurer a few words of advice but he is not in his seat at this time. Just as well for him to get it anyway. The Honourable T. Earle Hickey has a very serious problem, but you
