Wednesday, March 13, 1968 Hon . M. Lome Bonnell : What about Fourth Kings? Walter R. Shaw : You had 21,000 and in First Queens 12,000. Almost double. J. David Stewart : Take the yearly figure. Hon . Alex. B. Campbell : One of those questions directed earlier covered a period of a year and one-half, I think. Walter R. Shaw : No. L. George Dewar : April 1, to March 31st. Hon . Alexander B. Campbell : Of what year? Hon . M. Lome Bonnell : March 31, 1966, let's take that one for an example. In that year the First District of Queens has 76 people on social assistance. L. George Dewar : First Queens? Hon . M. Lome Bonnell : First Queens in 1966, and the Fourth District of Kings had 80 on social assistance. Walter R. Shaw : Pretty generous there in that of Kings too. $26,000 there. Hon . M. Lome Bonnell : The of Kings which was then represented by the then Honourable Leo Rossiter and his colleague had 152 on social assistance. (Laughter) Walter R. Shaw : How many ? Hon . M. Lome Bonnell : 152. J. Walter Dingwell : Pardon me Sir, you said "then represented" Sir; they are still represented. Walter R. Shaw : I don't get you at all, go on. I think there is something queer about it, that's all. (Laughter) Hon . M. Lome Bonnell : I would like at this time to extend my sympathy to the family of the late Margaret MacDonald . Margaret MacDonald a former member of Parliment, who worked in my Department in the Rehabilitation Branch, was a very faithful servant and was in Dartmouth, Halifax, at the time of her accident doing short course work for our Department when this tragedy took place. I would like to extend to her family our very deep sympathy. (Applause) I would also like to extend the sympathy of the Department and myself to the family of Harry Chan who was one of our cooks at , and died while still working with our Department during the last year. Now there are a couple of other items I would like to touch on, and one is how proud that I was, and I know that we all were, to know that a young Prince Edward Island girl became Miss Canada during 1968. (Applause) Miss Canada , or Carol MacKinnon as we know her here, was born in the Montague Hospital, her parents lived in Murray River , as her maternal and paternal grandparents as well. They moved from air-base to air-base as her father joined the air force, and they were stationed in Summerside at the time that she was chosen Miss Canada . So I am not trying to claim any credit for Murray River or Kings County. I would give all that to Summerside . I just want to claim the credit for Miss MacKinnon for the distinguished honour which she brought to our Province for 1968. (Applause) Miss MacKinnon 's father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Finlay MacKinnon are the children of J. L . and Mrs. MacKinnon from Murray River , and the late Mr. and Mrs. George Whiteway of Dover or Murray River . I think it is a great honour and I think it will certainly be a great attraction and a great advertisement for Prince Edward Island across Canada , this Continent as well as Europe and other areas where she travels. I would like also to state one other thing and that is to do with beautification. —253—
