L. George Dewar: Georgetown is one industr that should be employing three or four hun

Walter R. Shaw. You hit it alright.

y that should be open and one industry dred people instead of lying idle today.

Hon. Alex. B. Campbell: It was 700 last year. Hon. Robert E. Campbell: If you fellows had of run it right!

Walter R. Shaw: No wonder it’s on your mind. Hon. M. Lorne Bonnell: Oh, you’re doing a good job. Keep it up.

L. George Dewar: Another fact that I would like to bring to the attention of the

Provincial Treasurer is that he has greatly increased revenue over what the former Provincial Treasurer had in 1966. In 1966 the revenues for ordinary account were a little over $30,000,000. The expenditures were $28,000,000 and the former Provin- cial Treasurer reported a surplus of almost $2,000,000 in ordinary account. This year the Provincial Treasurer, 1967-1968, has a revenue forecast of $43,875,000 or almost $15,000,000 more. Almost $15,000,000 more and we would expect greatly expanded programs, more schools being built, more roads being paved. Instead of that, he’s going to cut back on them all. Even with $15,000,000 more revenue and at the same time he over expended that amount and came in with a deficit on ordinary account, which it a serious matter, of almost $100,000. (Applause) I would like to point out to him also when he speaks of debt, that on the Blst of March, 1966, the net debt was $49,000,000, something over $49,000,000 and on the Blst of March, 1968, the net debt, as reported in the budget speech, has gone up to $64,491,000 or an increase of $15,000,000. I might say that, of that figure, only four months were under the former administration and the present administration had 21 months....

Hon. Alex. B. Campbell: You must admit, though, that the asphalt put down across the Province during that election campaign was worth something.

L. George Dewar: Yes, I think it was all right. You put down the asphalt.

Unkown Voice: You put it down, we had to pay for it.

L. George Dewar: And then you try to blame the deficit on us. How inconsistant can you be?

Hon. Daniel J. MacDonald: Mr. Speaker, I wonder if the Honorable Member would permit me to make an important announcement.

L. George Dewar: Well, if it has anything to do with reducing the debt, go ahead.

Unknown Voice: Did Trudeau arrive?

Daniel J. MacDonald: Mr. Speaker, I have an announcement to make that I feel is of importance to the Assembly and also to the potato producers of this Province and other industries as well. A program of Federal assistance to Canadian potato growers was announced today by Agriculture Minister, Hon. J. J. Greene. Each

grower will be paid $25.00 per each eligible acre up to a maximum of $400 based on 1967 crop figures. (Applause)

Walter R. Shaw: I didn’t think they needed that? Hon. Daniel J. MacDonald: Say something now.

L. George Dewar: I doubt if that will insure him getting the leadership of the party, although he might be a very good man for it.

Hon. Robert E. Campbell: Are you in favor of the farmers getting it? L. George Dewar: We certainly are, yes. Hon. Robert E. Campbell: Thank you, Sir. I didn’t think you were.

Walter R. Shaw: Pretty high price for a subsidy. Would that be 25 dollars an acre up to what? How many acres.
