Walter R. Shaw: You must be on the new mathematics principle.
Hon. M. Lorne Bonnell: I don’t quote these figures to try to state that we had a 300% increase in tourists, as we did not.
Walter R. Shaw: Well, who told you it was 300%?
Hon. M. Lorne Bonnell: I did not quote these figures to show any great substantial increase in tourism and I did not quote these figures other than to show. . ..
Walter R. Shaw: They’re incorrect, my dear man.
Hon. M. Lorne Bonnell: Well, if they’re incorrect for the 0p osition, we ot poor bookkeeper in Mr. Hobbs. p g a very
Walter R. Shaw: 300%; my gracious, that’s ridiculous. Hon. M. Lorne Bonnell: Is it? Walter R. Shaw: Yes.
Hon. M. Lorne Bonnell: 300% increase. Three times five is fifteen and if you go by percentage, it’s 300%.
Walter R. Shaw: I wonder how you ever got through medical school? Lloyd G. MacPhail: Mr. Speaker, would the speaker permit a question?
Hon. M. Lorne Bonnell: I’d permit a question if it’s sensible.
Lloyd G. MacPhail: How in the name of time, and the question is, how in the name of time would you justify the figure that you give if 55,000 in 1956; a 300% in- crease would be 165,000. Therefore, the figure for last year should be 220,000. You
say it’s 81,000. In simple mathematics, that anyone can understand whether you use the old or the new math. . ..
M. Lorne Bonnell: Mr. Speaker, my learned friend will have to go back to school. (Laughter) Walter R. Shaw: 1 think both of you should go.
Hon. M. Lorne Bonnell: The increase each year, Mr. Speaker, was from 1945 to 1950, which was 5,000; from 1950 to 1955 —— 5,000, 5,000 per year was the total
number of tourists coming in here, 5,000 per year and only last year we gained 15,000 which is 300% increase over other years.
Now, Mr. Speaker, I would like to have an opportunity to go over the Budget. If they want to speak on the Budget we’d be glad to hear them. If they want to give a lecture on new math we’d be glad to hear that as well.
Unknown Voices: You’re sure not in mathematics at all. You’re out of your field.
Hon. M. Lorne Bonnell: I wasn’t going to talk about the golf course today but since my Honorable friend, the Leader of the Opposition, I was going to tell him how I was going to spend the money but I’d like to make a speech, if you like.
Walter R. Shaw: You and I are going out to fish tuna this year. You won’t know anything about it.
Hon. M. Lorne Bonnell: This year, Mr. Speaker, we are going to continue building
the golf course. We are going to continue building the golf course under an ARDA program until we have our FRED program signed.
Walter R. Shaw: Isn’t that now signed for around $326,000? Hon. M. Lorne Bonnell: The ARDA agreement? Walter R. Shaw: Yes, for the golf course at—
Hon. M. Lorne Bonnell: You’re not very far out. I’m not quite sure of the figure.
