I6 Early Settlers

cated under the chronology of Brudenell, Angus and Hugh Macdonald bought the remaining rights in the 999 year lease of Peter Emery in April of 1823 (P.E.I. General Registry, Libre No. 3, Folio 316-7). Hugh published his intention of leaving the partnership in 1831 (Royal Gazette, 8 March, 15 March, 12 April, and 26 April) and finally dissolved the partnership on 20 Aug. 1832. Ledgers of the Macdonald enterprise in the possession of Mrs. Watts, list Angus and Hugh as being situated at Brudenell Point from 29 March 1831 (Macdonald Ledger A: 12) to 14 Aug 1832 (Macd Ledger A:25) to 10 Nov. 1838 (Macd Led B227) at Brudenell Pt, at no listed place of residence from 16 Feb 1839 to 14 Nov 1840 (Macd Led B259) and after that time located intermittently between Georgetown and Seal River.

Hugh Macdonald probably came from Scotland with his father in 1806, bringing his wife Catherine with him. Hugh first lived at Panmure Island working with his father and brothers in the mercantile business and then became a partner of Angus in the business at Brudenell Pt. until the dissolu- tion of the partnership. It has never been clear from the various sources of information whether Hugh actually lived at Brudenell, but it would seem to

indicate that he did, from the various entries in the ledgers and other family papers. Hugh died on Panmure Island on 10 November 1857, and his wife died in 1872 at the age of 77 years.

The children of Hugh Macdonald included Andrew Archibald (A.A.) born 1828 at Brudenell, died in 1912 at Ottawa; Archibald John, born 1834; Augustine Collins, born 1837; Eliza; and Ann Isabella, who died as an infant in 1832. Andrew Archibald, the only Macdonald to have been born on Brudenell Pt. went on to become the famous A.A. Macdonald, one of the Fathers of Confederation. Edwin Macdonald of Panmure Island, a grandson of Hugh, still retains some of the original Macdonald property on Panmure

Island. Angus Macdonald emigrated from Scotland in 1806 and on the return

trip married Mary Macdonald sister of Hugh’s wife Catherine. Thompson and Johnston (196824) found the following children listed in the Holy Bible of J .E. Macdonald in the possession of Gerald Macdonald of Cardigan: Archibald John, born 28 July 1828, died 27 June 1829; Ann, born 4 March; James Emmanuel, born 5 Jan 1842, died Oct 1903; Matilda J. born 10 Feb 1844, died 30 Dept 1866; and Mary Jane, born Dec. 1846, died 15 April 1858. Angus Macdonald died 13 April 1863 at the age of 77 years, and his wife Mary died in Sept 1883 at the age of 76. On the basis of the original lease we must assume that Angus or Hugh returned to Panmure Island or moved to Georgetown sometime between Nov. 1830 when he first published his
