The Schoolhouse i 49

3. For chairs, tables, curtains, etc. - there could be donations and money raised by the people of the community.

4. A second part of the project was recommended: to cut a road to the cemetery and to build a sea wall. We could use the wood, selling some as lumber and pulpwood. This was o.k. with Mr. Kelly of L.I.P. Job Creation Branch in Charlottetown. 40 cords per month would be the minimum needed to be cut. Mr. Gilbert Clements said a government agency, the Department of Vital Statistics, of which Mr. MacLean is chairman, would cover expenses inside the cemetery. Mr. Clements would get in touch with him. Glen said mature beech and

spruce could be cut on his place and community could have it for the school without charge.

5. Two documents are needed to go with the application: (1) copy of the receipt for the purchase of the school; (2) statement by Aloysius MacDonald that his land can be used by the Panmure Island Community Association as long as the Association and the building are in existence. Every Annual Meeting would recognize the land as a loan from Aloysius MacDonald or his heirs.

6. For the upkeep of the schoolhouse, there could be membership fees, dances, card parties, suppers and canteen in the summer.

Volunteer needed to find out who owns land next to cemetery, and if it is Joe French, to get his permission. Glen to type a paper for him to sign. George Creed and Andrew offered to see Joe.

Motion by Andrew, seconded by Gertrude, that the L.I.P. Application be signed by Theresa, as president, on behalf of the Association; carried.

There was a question as to how people be hired. Those interested put name in to Manpower office in Montague with qualifications. At the time the project is accepted, the director goes with his people to manpower and asks if they can be hired. Andrew explained how he did it two years ago.

Lem said a card party for Oscar’s ducks will be held at the school Monday evening, October 7th.

A welcoming party at the Fiskes is to be held Saturday, October 12th and all Panmure Islanders including children are invited. Clarence offered to collect contributions for a gift.
