Contractors for the building were David and William Fraser of Pictou. The frame of the wooden building was cut and erected in Nova Scotia. It was then dismantled, marked and shipped to Charlottetown and re-assembled on the new foundation on Richmond Street. The building was ready, and on the completion of the church on July 25, [860, they were organized into a congregation and furnished with a regular supply of preaching. The first service was conducted by Rev. Robert Laird, who at the time was minister in Princetown(later Malpeque) and Bedeque. Rev. J. D. McGiIlivray preached for six months.

A call was extended on May 14, 1862, by 29 members and 47 adherents who guaranteed the sum of $600 per annum to Rev. Robert Alexander Falconer to become the first permanent pastor of the fledgling

congregation. He was ordained in the Queen Square Church on August 14, 1862.

On October l4, I862, Clyde River, previously under the charge of Brookfield-West River-Bonshaw, was united with Queen Square Church and Rev. Falconer preached at Clyde River every other Sunday afiemoon.

The first record of an elder for the church was William Mutch, ruling elder, who was'present at Rev. Falconer's induction.

On September 28, I869, afier seven years at Zion, Rev. Falconer was inducted as pastor of St. James Presbyterian Church, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Queen Square Church together with the Free Church, both being now without ministers, and by an act of Presbytery, and with the consent of both congregations, united into one congregation known from l870 as Zion Church. At this time Clyde River station was removed from the new Zion Church and joined to West River and Brookfield. It is interesting to note, talks were initiated at that time between the Free

Church, Queen Square and the Kirk of St. James to form one church. These talks however failed.

ZION CHURCH: The combined congregation "Zion" now worshipped in the Queen Square Church, it being larger and more in the central part of the city. The old Free Church building was rented by the Upper Prince Street Methodist, the 2nd Methodists Church congregation, while they

\, were constructing their Church (where the Ritz Apartments are now located).

_ .The first Union (combined) Session of Zion Church comprised: William Mutch, John Locherby, George Walker, George Henderson, Kenneth Henderson, and Hon. David Laird. The first permanent pastor

ofthe new Zion Church was not inducted until July l9, I871, when Rev. John McLean McLeod accepted the call.
