1850 William Mutch was ordained this year. Although no record is available, he died in 1906 reported by Session as having been an elder for fifly six years. 1854 On July 26, The Synod of the Free Church of Prince Edward Island was constituted. On September 11, the first two Elders , George Henderson and Kenneth Henderson , were ordained in the Free Church Charlottetown. 1855 Presbytery passed a resolution in favor of a prohibitory liquor law. 1856 Site of the 'old' Zion Church on was purchased for $2,275. Rev. Alexander Sutherland , of New London reported that on Tuesday August 5th, he preached to the Free Church people of Charlottetown in the Temperance Hall at which time they presented a call signed by 45 individuals of whom 25 were heads of families and concurred by 17 females. £88.11 was subscribed for the ministers salary. (This call was for Rev. George Sutherland ) It was put in his hands with a minimum stipend of £150. Currency to be paid to the minister on the day of induction. The induction of Rev. George Sutherland took place on Wednesday evening August 27th. 1858 From the Examiner of July 26: "There are in P. E. Island about 22,500 Presbyterians subdivided as follows:- Established Church of Scotland 9,700 (including 5,000 McDonaldites), Presbyterian Church of Nova Scotia 6,800 and Free Church 6,000. The Presbyterians of P. E. Island are not fond of quarrelling. They live like good Christians, and near friends and brethren, as they are. "There is a very handsome building in the course of erection for the Presbyterian Church of Nova Scotia. It will probably be the most elegant in Charlottetown . (This is Queen Square Church, which opened in July 1860). When the Free Church and Secession unite, this Church will do them both very well." (This union happened twelve years later in 1870) The Examiner was not so kind to the Catholics. "The Papists of the Island are a bold set. They thought a short time ago, they were to have everything their own way, inasmuch as they had a Popish Governor and a very Popish Cabinet. But Protestants are still too strong and there are still too many honest men among them to permit Rome to rule the roost. The Babylonian Chapel rears its head proudly above all the Churches in the town. This is an insult which should not be permitted in a Christian land - the temple of the Antichrist more imposing and in a more prominent position than the temples of Christ." 21
