1911 The denominations on P. E. I . were as follows: Anglicans 4,939 Baptists 5,372 Christians 1,121 Methodists 12,209 Presbyterians 27,509 Catholics 41,994 Permission for selling and erecting having been obtained from Presbytery on March 30, the old buildings at the corner of Prince and Grafton were sold and removed. On May 15 the Building Committee entered into a contract with John M. Clark of Summerside , for the construction of the new Zion Church for the sum of $31,985. The work was begun shortly thereafter and the cornerstone was laid on October 4 by his Honor Lieutenant Governor Benjamin Rogers in the presence of the Maritime Synod . $8.00 was spent on hymn books for the gallery. A delegation of the choir met with Session asking consideration to introduce gowns for the choir members. Their request was turned down. (They did not receive their reply until next year, and it was not until 1918 that the choir was seen in gowns) In July a workman, Arthur (Jum) Dalziel died as a result of an industrial accident while at work erecting the Church. He was killed when he was struck on the head by a block of stone he had just delivered, which when hoisted, fell from a derrick. 1912 Our minister, Rev. Ralph Grant Strathie passed away on October 27, in St. John's, Newfoundland , surrounded by his family. The new minister Rev. George C . Taylor was inducted on December 10. Rev. Mr. Taylor of Kensington was the supply minister for the summer at the rate of $15.00 per week. In April the Canadian Pipe Organ Co. of St. Hyacinthe, Quebec was contracted for construction and installation of a pipe organ at a cost of $3,500. In May contracts were awarded for: wiring $191.25, plumbing $270.00 and heating $2,500.00. In June the contract for seating was awarded to Valley City Seating Co. of Dundas , Ontario for $2,676.00. In October, Mr. G. D. Wright constructed the pulpit, platform chairs, and communion table and chairs at a cost of $260.00. Mr. Wright donated the pulpit, valued at $80.00. In November, 400 chairs at 73 cents each were purchased for the Sunday School Room Permission was given by Session to invite Miss Allen and Miss Morse to enter the choir. The matter of gowns for the choir was discussed in Session on August 18 with the following reply on August 23: "The communication with reference to the question of using gowns was received and respectfully considered with the accompanying reasons, but the Session decided the question of such vital importance that they considered it proper to have the matter referred to the congregation." -33-
