A designation service was held on Wednesday May 26 for Miss Joyce MacNevin , recent graduate of Ewart College, as a Deaconess. She was in the pulpit on June 13. Mr. Allan Stewart B.A ., B.Mus . gave his first recital in Zion Church. We wish him every success in his chosen profession. 1977 On July 31, Dr. Donald A . Campbell, pastor for the last 18 years preached his last sermon "THE GOSPEL'S LAST WORD". A vacancy committee was formed consisting of: Millar MacFadyen, Earl Beaton , Garnet Buell , W. Blair MacDonald , Lloyd G. MacNevin , Perley Taylor and Reg MacNutt. A total of nineteen names of prospective candidates were put forward, narrowed down to three: Rev. Malcolm Caldwell M.Div . of Greely Ontario , Rev. Gordon Matheson B. Th . of Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia as well as Evangelist-at-large for Board of Congregational Life, and Rev. Wayne Smith B.A. B.D . of Toronto , Associate Secretary of the Board of Congregational Life and later Moderator of the General Assembly 1982. They preached on three successive Sundays in August. Mr. Caldwell later withdrew. The two remaining were put to ballot (members of and Mermaid were eligible) and Rev. Gordon J . Matheson of Tatamagouche Nova Scotia was the clear choice. The interim-moderator, Rev. John Cameron , of the Kirk of St. James, was thanked for his work. The Trustee board had the church building appraised with a value of $930,000, plus organ and furnishings. Consideration was given to enlarging the library. A new roof was installed on the balance of the church. The manse at had its kitchen re-modeled, new aluminum door, insulation in the attic, as well as insulation in the manse. 1978 A special meeting of the congregation was called on April 25 to deal with the Greenfield Manse. It was determined that approximately $3,000 per year over the next five years would be required to keep the manse up to date. It was decided to seek approval of Presbytery to sell the Manse and purchase a new one. It was later decided to construct a new manse on . The Manse was built and paid for during the year. It has a value on the Balance Sheet of the Church of $71,075. At a meeting of the Congregation on July 6, it was decided to replace the heating system of the church at a cost of $41,900. 1979 The annual meeting this year was in the form of a pot-luck supper, with the children (25) watching a movie afterwards while the parents (100) conducted the business.
