He moved back to Earltown in 1958, and in 1874 went to the United States. He married Miss Ross of Stomoway, Scotland . Alexander was fluent in Gaelic. Neil Born : Apr 12, 1829 Ordained: Sep 19, 1855 Died: Jun 15, 1898 Born in Earltown, , Nova Scotia , April 12, 1829, he was educated in Pictou Academy and the Free Church College, Halifax. He was sent by the Home Mission Committee to the Presbytery of Prince Edward Island , who licensed him, on July 25, 1855, to preach and appointed him to supply the vacant congregation of Murray Harbour . They wasted no time in presenting him with a call to become their pastor. He was ordained and inducted in Murray Harbour , September 19, 1855. He was a strong supporter of the Union of 1860 between the Free Church and the Presbyterian Church of Nova Scotia. He was as well an able and fearless advocate of the temperance cause. Because of the vast amount of physical toil in serving his parish, he found it necessary due to ill health to resign his charge. He moved to St. David's, Saint John N .B ., 1861, Summerside Presbyterian Church in 1873, and St. John's, Chatham, N.B. in 1885. He died in Chatham June 15, 1898. Their first church was a small building 24 x 30 feet, half finished outside and only rough board floor, with very primitive seating. Though few in number they grew rapidly under his guidance.
