Keir, Rev. Dr. John

Dr. Keir was born in Bucklyvie, Stirlingshire, Scotland February 2, 1780. Educated Glasgow University and Whitburn, coming to Nova Scotia in 1808. He was sent by the Pictou Presbytery to P.E.l. and he was the second Presbyterian minister to settle on P. E. I. (Peter Gordon was the first). He was ordained June 1810, in Malpeque with Rev. James MacGregor preaching the sermon.
Dr. Keir was Moderator of the first Presbytery of Prince Edward Island when it was formed October 1 1, I821. He was appointed professor ofTheology in 1844 at Pine Hill. He died in the September 22, 1858, in his fifty-first year of ministry, while attending Synod in 'l‘ruro.
He as well had medical training. Before leaving Scotland he married Mary Bumet of Glasgow and they had a large family. His Doctorate was from Glasgow University.
Rev. James A. McGowan,(Feb 20, I908 - Mar 3 I, 1991) established Camp Keir in 1947 in honor of Dr. Keir.

Born Scotland, educated at U.P. Hall. He came to Prince Edward Island in 1846 and was ordained and inducted over Cove Head and West St. Peters congregation, July l, 1846 (following the death of Rev. Robert Douglas). lie was called by one hundred and seventy—six members and adherents, with a guaranteed stipend of one hundred and twenty pounds. So rapid was the growth on the congregations under Mr. Allan, that on July 28, I852, Presbytery deemed it advisable to disjoin West St. Peters from Cove Head. At the time nearly the whole of the population of
Stanhope, Cove Head and Brackley Point was Presbyterian. He retired in November 12, 1890 and died August I l, 1891.
