Subsequently, a beautiful monument, a token of affectionate remembrance was erected at the head of his early grave." The monument has the following inscription:
Erected by Friends and Admirers To the memory of the Rev. David Sutherland Pastor of Zion Church Born in Bruan, Caithness, Scotland Died July 8, 1898
The following minute was passed at a special meeting of Session held on July I5, I898, and the Clerk was instructed to furnish copies to the widow and parents of the deceased.
"It is with feelings of pain and unfeigned regret that we, as a session, record the death of our Moderator, the Rev. David Sutherland. He became the head of the subordinate church court, when, on the 18th of December, I889, he was inducted Pastor of Zion Church Congregation, by the Presbytery of Prince Edward Island, and ever since until his decease on the 8th of July, instant, he has presided over us with unfailing courtesy, and guided our deliberations with that wisdom that cometh from above. As Minister of the Congregation of which we are office-bearers, his labours were attended with abundant success. He was a lucid, eloquent and faithful preacher, rightly dividing the word of life. His piety being sincere and active, his example was a power for righteousness. In short he was a model pastor, and the Session and congregation in his
death have sustained an irreparable loss." It is said by those who knew him, he never wrote or rehearsed a
sermon, but rather made notes. He did not preach a written word, for like the prophets of old, he preached the word that he "saw".
He was the first, and still the only, minister of the church to die and be buried from Zion.
Interim Moderator - Rev. Thomas F. Fullerton of St. James. A call was issued to Rev. A.L. Geggie, of Truro, like Rev. Sutherland
a native Scot and classmate of his, but on November 20, I898, Rev. Whiteside read a letter in the pulpit from Geggie, declining the call.
