MACLEOD REV. DONALD Ban Minister of Zion - April 11, 1899 - Nov 08, 1903
Born: Jul 18, 1854 Ordained: Nov 1883 Died: May 23, 1918, age 63
Born in Orwell, P.E.I. July 18, 1854, one of nine sons of Malcolm MacLeod who was from the Isle of Skye, Scotland. In 1874 the family moved to Schuyler, Kansas and later Nebraska. In 1881 Donald graduated from Park College, Missouri with the degree, Master of Arts, and in 1883 from Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio, first honor man of his class. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in November 1883. The same year he married Elizabeth daughter of Rev. William C. Wauchope of Buford, Georgia. His first charge was Nortonville, Kansas. Then to Water Street Presbyterian, Quincy, Massachusetts, 1885. By July 29, 1886, it was reported to have a membership of one hundred and twenty five, of those thirty two had recently united with the congregation. A new edifice was to be erected with a capacity of four hundred and twenty. While in Quincy, his wife died and he returned home to Prince Edward Island for a visit.
In December 30, 1886, he was placed over the congregation of Orwell Head(Orwell Head having previously been "McDonaldite", was organized and accepted into the Presbyterian Church in Church, in July 1886). He continued to minister over them for twelve years.
On February 27, 1899 Zion Church issued a call to Rev. Donald B. MacLeod, signed by 197 members and 80 adherents, with a guarantee of $1,400.00 annual stipend. He was inducted at Zion on April 1 l, 1899. During MacLeod's ministry at Zion, perhaps the most notable change was the change in the service of communion from general to individual cups. Strong feelings and opposition were evoked among some twenty families and individuals by this event, but time blotted out their dissention. 134 new communicants were added to the roll of Zion Church in his four and one half years. He resigned effective November 8, 1903.
He moved to Massachusetts and was pastor of Union Square Church from 1903 to 1908. He was called and inducted in Orwell June 17, 1908, serving until November 9, 1913. On October 16, 1909 he married Mary Jane MacLeod, a teacher of Orwell. He died May 23, 1918. His widow resided in Kinross and later in the Charlotte Residence for twenty five years. She died at the Livingstone and MacArthur Nursing Home, Charlottetown at age ninety seven and was buried in Orwell Head Cemetery.
