In May I966, he received and accepted a call to Tatamagouche pastoral charge in Nova Scotia. On April 22, 1967, their only daughter Leza Joanne was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. In I969 he received a Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.) degree from the American Theological College in Chicago. In I971 he received the degree of Bachelor of Religious Education (B.R.E.) from the same College.

While in Tatamagouche, Gordon was active in promoting minor sports and was the driving force behind starting the minor hockey program in Tatamagouche and on the North Shore, Nova Scotia. As a member of the Board of Directors, he enthusiastically supported the construction of the new North Shore Recreation facility.

During his years in Tatamagouche, he served on the Hospital Board and actively supported the building of a new hospital. He was also active on the Board of Directors of Willow Lodge Nursing Home during the construction of their new facility. He was the Founder and Chairperson for the Board of Directors at Holiday Ranch, Nova Scotia. a Christian Riding camp and Conference Centre, from I968 to I985. This Camp hosted approximately 450-500 children yearly with special interests and hearing impaired children. To top it all off, he served as an active firefighter on the Tatamagouche Volunteer Fire Department. And all four churches (Tatamagouche, Wallace, Pugwash and The Falls) thrived under his pastoral care.

Gordon was Boys Work Secretary for the Synod of the Atlantic Provinces from I968 for 3 years, Moderator of Pictou Presbytery in I969, and Moderator of Synod in 1972 while in Tatamagouche. In July I973, he participated in the World Congregation of Evangelists in Lucerne, Switzerland. I975 Rev. Matheson was an Evangelist-at-large for the Board of Congregational Life of The Presbyterian Church in Canada (These are ministers of the Church who are prepared to conduct preaching missions related activities in evangelism upon invitation from congregations, presbyteries or ministerial associations). During Gordons eleven years in Tatamagouche the church membership doubled and the Sunday School membership tripled.

On November 3, I977, Gordon was inducted into the congregation of Zion Presbyterian Church, Charlottetown, a position he has held for the last 20 years.

In I982 he served as chairman of the Leighton Ford Crusade. In July I983, he was a participant in the Conference of Itinerant Evangeltsts in Amsterdam, Holland. In I992 Gordon served as Chairman ofthe John Wesley White Crusade Island Mission.

Dr. Matheson hosts the radio broadcast "Words of Victory" on CFCY 630 on Sunday momings at 8230 as a ministry to seniors and shut-ins. .He is past Chair of the Upper Room Hospitality Ministry which is responsrble for the soup kitchen and food bank.
