In I909 he took up residence in Ottawa and died there in l9l4 at age 8l. A western historian wrote: "there are few men who have given to the West, services more characterized by fairness, breadth of sympathy, integrity and public spirit.”
A stone cairn was erected in New Glasgow, P.E.I. in his honor and has been declared a National Historic Site.
He was elected elder onion Church in I870.

He was an elder of 60 years (by Samuel Nash's account) at time of death at age IOZ year 4 months. He was an old Covenanter of Scotland. (a supporter of the Scottish Presbyterian Covenants)
In I904, Rev John MacLeod wrote: The congregation of Zion..."can boast of having one of the oldest, if not the very oldest Elder in the Dominion, who is now in the one hundred and first year ofhis age and the fifty—fifth year ofeldership. This patriarchal Elder is still hale and hearty, steps with elasticity ofa man of sixty, and possesses almost unimpaired the use of his intellectual powers, which, those who know him can testify, are of a very high order. A man of extensive information, of sound judgement and of genuine piety, he is a noble specimen of the good old Scottish elder."
