MACNUTT . George REGINALD fREG^ (Aug 16, 1906 - Dec 03, 1992) Reg was born in Darnley , P.E.I. , the son of Robert F . and Lulu (Cousins)MacNutt. He joined the armed forces in 1942 and served until 1946. Reg was appointed a member of the P.E.I. Prohibition Commission in 1946, and later was a member of the Liquor Control Commission, until his retirement in 1972. Ordained an Elder in 1944, he was Clerk of Session from 1977 to 1982 when he resigned due to illness. He was Chairman of the Trustees from 1955 to 1966, except one year, the longest term on record. As well as the leadership role he carried at Zion, Reg was also a leader in the community at large, being a Chairman or Director of numerous volunteer organizations. He was awarded the highest award of merit from the for voluntary work, and was voted Islander of the year in 1974. MACRAE (family connection) The following MacRaes were or are Elders of Zion Church. James EWEN (Aug 17. 1869 - ) Elder from 1897 to 1913 and Trustee during 1898-1907 Born Albany, PEI to Donald and Flora(McMillan) Matthews, he received his early education in district school and attended Prince of Wales College. He taught school in Wilmot Valley (3 yrs.), Albany (3 yrs.) and Searleton (2 yrs.) and was regarded as a highly successful teacher. In May 1894, he entered journalism beginning as City editor for the Guardian. In November 1898, he transferred to the Patriot and his energy and drive brought him to the position of manager of the paper. In July 1902, he retired from journalism and formed a partnership with J.K. Ross (Ross & Matthews) to sell life insurance for Life Assurance Company and the Railway Passengers Accident Assurance Company . He was also soliciting passenger agent for the Canadian Pacific Railway. On October 20, 1897, he married Debbie Smith Lowther daughter of David T. Lowther a prominent farmer of Carleton. Of recognized business ability, sterling integrity and engaging personality, Mr. Matthews enjoyed the esteem of all who knew him. 146-
