It is the anti-christian spirit in Germany that has plunged the world into the hell that it is passing through today. He then proceeded to develop the thought that this is a great home mission problem, -the war and taxation in Canada . He made a most impressive appeal for the forward foreign missionary movement pointing out that the presence of the little army of missionaries in the east is not resented. In referring to the contributions of missions he said our own budget on foreign missions would not pay the war bill of Britain for fifteen minutes and that in view of our meagre support to missions, the singing of "Onward Christian Soldiers Marching as to War," becomes a mere farce. He then went on to speak of the humility, confession and patience which must be shown in the great movement. He then dwelt on the lines of which the campaign should be carried on and spoke of the seed of preaching the younger boys and enthusing them with the missionary spirit. He quoted from Sir Thomas White , Minister of Finance, to show that Canada was never richer than she is now and while man may be honestly making money, others are bleeding, dying and starving. We can only save ourselves from hardness of heart and scared consciences by giving of our wealth to the redemption of the world. There is an increasing feeling that the Church of God is to have an unparalleled opportunity and therefore responsibility after the war. The speaker quoted the great leader in the British navy and army in Parliament in line with his claim that the situation presents a call and challenge to the church for a Forward Movement for a reconsecrated and rededicated church and a Christ possessed land. We must see to it that they who died shall not have died in vain. The headline in The Island Patriot of that day reads: "GERMANS ARE IN RETREAT ALONG THE WHOLE FRONT OF THE 1917 LINE". With two large print bi-line articles: "On a Wide Front North and South of the Germans are in Full Retreat" and "Home Missions, Social Service and Evangelism the Forward Movement and Other Questions Taken Up." The meeting of the Maritime Synod in Charlottetown made the front page of The Island Patriot for three days, with three-quarters of a page (the other quarter devoted to an R. T. Holman 's ad for ladies dresses at $9.75 - $33.50) listing all delegates to the Synod and with whom they were staying. 193
