BEAR RIVER, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND MY FAVORITE SPOT FN Bear River , a very small, unique, rural community situated between two bodies of water, lies in the Eastern section of Prince Edward Island , and is only seven kilometers from a white, sandy beach at either exit. This particular community is heaven to me, because in this locality we saw our children grow from infancy to adults, and now our grandchildren are following in their footsteps. Here, the open fields become a baseball-diamond in summer, and a skating rink, or a ski resort in winter, depending on weather conditions. The lily pond and babbling brook, situated at the extremity of our property, are a natural way to discern science at its best. The first indication of Spring comes with the rich, baritone voices of the frogs, and search for tadpoles found in their mass of jelly. Other times, children are found sitting quietly on the bank waiting for a new two- pound trout to nibble at their bated hooks. Then there is the instantaneous response when the sudden flap of the flat, rubbery tail of a beaver surprises them. Nature-lovers also enjoy watching the black ducks nurturing their young as they patrol this water haven. Later, this pond is transformed as if by magic into a garden of pink and white blossoms when the lilies appear on pads attracting the eyes of tourists who capture on film this natural beauty set in a pond. This community fascinates me with its large acreage of red soil under cultivation, its green foliage, and, later the pink-and-white blossoms that add to the beauty of the area. In the fall, when the leaves turn crimson, and the barley turns golden, the crops are harvested, producing an abundance of potatoes and grain that become food for families and livestock at home and abroad.
