Today, most students have convocation exercises to mark the end of the school year. Students with high academic standing usually receive certificates or awards. Trophies are given to those who have athletic ability, and do well in different sports. As the end of the year approaches, students enjoy field trips and often go on overnight

excursions. In a rural school, it was quite different and instead of a big

celebration, the children were content to conclude the school year by having a picnic and playing some games. They were not rewarded for academic achievement, but this particular year, the teacher gave each student a small prize. The boys received pocket combs and the girls were given barrettes for their hair. In 1955, the picnic'was held on the property now owned by Kevin and Karen Chiasson. It was customary to take younger children to school for the big day, so there are some in this picture that were not school age.
