as the result of a second heart attack. He wife, Alice, died in April, 1980. Virginia recalls that they were a very happy, close-knit family, who enjoyed life in spite of the challenges that they had to endure. The following is a copy of a letter received by James H. Hughes from his son Lance Corporal Stephen Hughes . November 8, 1917 Dear Father, Just a few lines to let you know that I just got wounded on October 26th at the Battle of , wounded in the right hand and two bullets in the left arm. It was a hard old battle. It lasted for twelve hours. We took the Ridge and when we got it we had very few men left and so they came back at us and drove us back before we got another battalion to reinforce us, but we took it again and holding it yet. You know the good old Canadians were never known to give up before they got what they went after. I have been in quite a few battles but that was the hardest yet. We were under a storm of machine gun bullets from when we started and mud to our knees. I never want to be in another battle like it. I was in the hospital in France for five days before being sent to England , so I was good and glad to get away from the sound of the guns for awhile. The wound in my right hand is getting better, but my left arm will take quite awhile yet. H.R. MacDonald , my old pal got shot through the jaw. He was in the same hospital with me in France, so I 77
