so they thought that helped with the cure. Margaret later became a registered nurse. Andrew, her brother, was very shy and refused to answer anything that the teacher asked him. The teacher, Peter Conway, became impatient with him and said, “I might as well go and get Donald Hughie’s rooster, he will answer more than you.” Andrew went on to become a christian brother.

Forerunners were common in these days. One dark night, while walking up to Michael McGaugh’s, Kay saw a light that came up the lane from Phil McGaugh’s and it disappeared when it reached the highway. A week later, her family saw the same light following the same path. That night they heard that Jim McGaugh, a brother of Phil McGaugh’s had recently returned from Boston. While visiting his brother, Phil, he became ill and died. The light appeared at the time of his death.

One dark night, Denny Costello was coming from fishing at Naufrage. As he walked along, something appeared to be walking in front of him. When he walked fast, the object still kept ahead of him. When he moved at a slower pace the object slowed down, as well. Denny became very nervous, and when he arrived at George Gallant’s gate, he stopped, removed his cap, and blessed himself. Then he put on his cap and continued on his journey. Surprisingly enough, the object disappeared. When he reached home, he removed his cap, and he noticed two long strings hanging from it. His worries were over when he convinced himself that the mysterious object that escorted him home, was only the strings hanging from his cap. Everyone teased Denny about the episode. Later, when someone met Denny, the greeting was, “Hi Denny, did you see any forerunners this evening?”

Kay recalls that money was not a priority when they were young. Without television, radio, or telephone they were never bored.
