One farmer was certain that no one would take his truck—wagon because he filled it with turnip tops to make it too heavy to move. They took his wagon and left it in the ditch, and turned his outhouse over, as well.

On another occasion, a man was very surprised when he went out to start his car the day after Hallowe’en. He pressed the accelerator, only to have his trousers smeared with the contents of an egg. Someone had placed an egg under his gas pedal.

Although they did cause some headaches for a few residents, there was very little damage done to property. Few fires occurred as the result of Hallowe’en night in that era. It was their night to have fun

without doing much harm.
