Gaudet and his wife moved to North from Rustico . It was shortly before Christmas when Julia became ill. Donald MacDonald and Mamie O'Hanley , who were neighbours, went to visit Joe and Julia. They were coming out of the porch, when Mamie noticed Donald walking along the outer edge of the porch and leaving that way. Once outside, Mamie questioned Donald about it. He replied, "You just walked through a casket." Word of this spread throughout the district, and everyone thought that Julia was going to die. Julia didn't die, but a few days later, Joe's brother Aneas, was killed in an accident, and the remains came to Bear River and were waked at Joe's. Donald helped them to carry the casket into the house, and they had to drop the casket in the porch to adjust the door. This was the very spot where Donald had seen the casket. Some time later, a woman in the district died, and Donald remarked that there would be a third death soon, since he had seen a funeral going by. Sure enough, a short time later, a young woman named Sarah Gallant died suddenly. Marjorie recalls Donald coming into their house many times, and telling them about sleeping in the barn. The covers were rattling on the stove, and he was worried about staying inside the house. Marjorie, one of the younger members of her family, had it easier than the older children who were now out working and helping to supplement the family's income. They often sent "care boxes" home as well. Marjorie recalls the yards of material included in these packages. Her mother was a wonderful seamstress, and she would make dresses and other garments of first-class quality, which would make any girl feel proud. Marjorie recalls that they were never hungry. They had their own meat and vegetables, bread, butter, and molasses. Sometimes their mother would even make thick molasses cookies. They made enough of their own butter in the fall, to last for the winter. There was no milk 122
