term visitors, workers, or over-night travellers.

Three established Bed & Breakfast homes in the late nineteen-fifties were: MacLeod’s Tourist Home and Cottages, operated by Mrs. DJ. MacLeod, Fyfe’s Tourist Home, (former Wedlock home) operated by Mrs. Anna Fyfe, and Linden Cove Farms, operated by Helen and AS. MacEwen. The latter is still in operation.

As there was no established Tourist Bureau at this time, the number of overnight visitors often depended on the local storekeepers, Audrey and Ken MacKay. They used to telephone the vari- ous homes where extra ‘beds’ might be found and direct the travellers to that place. Travellers

might also see a small sign posted at a driveway.

In 1965, Irene and Blois MacEwen joined the Farm Vacation Association, opening their home, Creekside, to visitors. In 1981, the Bed & Breakfast Association was included in this operation. This continued for twenty-five years, when the MacEwens retired to Kensington.

Other established havens for the traveller include: The Highlands, begun in 1960, by Mary Jean and Don MacKay, which were sold to Dorothy and David Simpson, in 1975 and presently operating under Gulf Breeze Cottages and Tourist Home.
