Public opinion raged across the province usually criticizing Premier Jones for his words against the education system. The Premier resigned shortly afterwards. For the teachers who were working for a lifetime commitment, the wages began to increase. The Teachers’ Federation did gain one important issue. In 1949 teachers were granted 15 sick days per year, without penalty, and a substitute was to be paid by the Provincial Government the sum of $3.25 per day.

The Premier’s speech remained in the minds of many people for years and older residents espe- cially, were inclined to agree with his statements. For the many hundreds of parents on the Island, who still had children to educate, their demands for better working conditions and more qualified teachers for all classrooms across the Island were being heard by the Government offi—

cials.

The struggle for a better education system has persisted since the first schoolhouse was con— structed. All schools are now moving into the technological age at a rapid rate. The informa- tion highway has brought the farthest corner of the world to our doorstep. It seems as though no matter how hard one tries, a person cannot gather all the information that is available. Any student can ‘go to the moon and back’ in the matter of seconds and visually understand exactly what is on the ‘star’. Education is now available for all mankind!
