MACNEILL
Allison “Allie”and Vivian (Marks) MacNeill purchased the former Brown property from Ray and Annie Douglas in 1961. They did not become permanent residents. Gardiner MacNeill, their son, built a home closer to the shore than the main house. It was built in 1978. He and his
family moved into it for Christmas, 1979.
At the present time the home is being rented year—around. The land across the road has been sold to Leslie MacKay.
MACKAY
Captain HUGH MacKAY son of Donald “Bush” and Janet (McKay) McKay lived on the Mill River Road, built vessels on the “cove” on their property, then sailed them to England and sold the merchandise and usually sold the vessel. Capt. Hugh also sailed vessels from the Morris & Rattenbury shipyard, in North Granville. These were loaded with exports. The vessels and
merchandise were sold abroad.
Many of Capt. Hugh’s charts, compasses and mementos were given to his granddaughter, Mrs. Marion (Emerson) Matheson, North Granville. These items, unfortunately, were lost when the Matheson house burned.
There is a story told that on one of Capt. Hugh’s expeditions to the South Seas he purchased a parrot to take home with him. Captain Hugh “swore” that the new bird in the community could only “swear in Spanish”!!
