Another land purchase for Joe was located above the present house. This was deeded from Elmer Fyfe to Joe Smith June 27, 1958 and was between the Smith home and the K.R. MacKay property. Joe could be seen at any time of the day from early spring to late in the autumn gathering plants to be used in dye colours for hooked rugs. The plants were also dried and used in exquisite bou¬ quets. Hooked rugs, which were hooked by "Joe" and his mother are still displayed in numer¬ ous private residences in the area. Joe also enjoyed "stamping" canvasses for his neighbours to hook. After Mrs. Smith died in the early 1960's, Joe resold the home to Earl Carr and went to British Columbia for a short while.
