receiving or exporting of goods. Whether at Stanley, Campbellton , or Clifton wharf locations is not known. It has been suggested that a store was located at Sutherland's Creek, on the Mill River Road, which could have been the location of the Lydiard Bros , store and tavern business. It is generally accepted that vessels were built in large numbers in this locality; thus a larger population worked here rather than in the village. There is no record to indicate where these families later resided although the MacKay History research indicates that the family moved to Chicago, 111.. S. & H. BROWN & CO. SAMUEL H. (1841 - May 31, 1906) son of William and Jane Wilson Brown , formerly of New Glasgow , PEI m. MARY JANE SIMPSON (1847-1929) daughter of John and Barbara (Woodside) Simpson. Samuel and his family operated the BROWN STORE on the site of the present store on the Western side of the river. On October 26, 1880, Samuel purchased 15 acres of land from Robert Fyfe for his store and shipping business. Samuel sold this store to the MacMILLAN BROS as well as another land purchase which Samuel Brown had acquired from James Banks , for a total of 48 acres of land. This sale is dated Sept. 22, 1874. Although the road divided his land, Samuel still owned one-half acre on the opposite side of the road. This half-acre he later deeded to Dr. R.D. McNeill on March 30, 1889. Here Samuel built a large double house. Part of this structure was used as a store as well as a residence. At this time, Samuel's brother, Alexander joined the business and they continued with their store and exporting business under the name S. & H. BROWN & CO. With the decline in the schooner trade they sold the property and moved to British Columbia . John C. Clark purchased the property of Mo of an acre from the Brown Bros . He moved the house in two parts via the ice to . The second part of the house went through the ice before the horses reached the shore. The house had to be "winched" to dry land. Part of this house was moved by Walter Reid for his residence. His son Brendan , wife Louise, and family lived there until 1995. The home is now owned by Dawson and Christine (Carr) Paynter. The second part burned. It was also used as a store. Mr. Clark sold the site to Dr. J.E. Fleming on March 11, 1904. Dr. Fleming built his large house on the site of the former Brown home west of the river and on the north side of the road. D. Alexander (1850-1933) was twice married and had a family of three children. Both families moved to Vancouver, B.C. when they ceased their mercantile business. {see further information in Genealogy } McMillan MacMILLAN The McMillan family came from Wheatley River . Here the family was involved in the store- keeping business as well as owners of a lucrative exporting and importing business. Alexander McMillan (1820 - Oct. 9, 1884) came from Scotland to Prince Edward Island with other members of his family. The family settled in the Wheatley River area. Alexander m. Sarah Ross (1844- 1914) of Wheatley River . After beginning a store business in the village and expanding to build a large store in Hunter River , Alexander purchased 48 acres of land in Stanley Bridge , on Sept. 22, 1874. This was the S. & H.
