Handbook - 1880-81 indicates that the store is known as MeMILLAN & BROWN. In the Directory for 1889-90, S. (Samuel) H. Brown is shown as operating a store with his brother, Alexander Brown. This store was located across the road from the prior site. The Brown fam- ilies were also living in a large house on this site.

In the Mercantile Agency listing of 1876 Alexander is listed as a merchant and farmer. His worth in Stanley Bridge was estimated between $10,000, and $25,000. The MacMillan family had their own currency printed for easier trading within the stores in Wheatley River, Hunter

River, and Stanley Bridge.

In Stanley Bridge the McMillan family lived in the house next to the store. Indications are that the McMillan family built this home which has been remodelled in 1997 by Catherine

MacKinnon and her husband, Donald Harron.

Alexander was associated in the stores with his brothers, Archibald, Ewen, and Henry. Archibald was a Sea Captain and built ships with other family members in Stanley Bridge. He sailed these vessels as an exporter and importer for his family. Dougald Henry states that Archibald was building ships in the village between 1865—1870.

Captain Archibald (1815 - Oct. 20, 1855) is buried in South Granville Cemetery.

ALEXANDER’s wife SARAH, and son, DANIEL b. Dec. 19, 1880 lived in the village after Alexander died in 1884. Mrs. McMillan sold the home and store business (2 acres) to Charles W. Kielly, on Feb. 18, 1903. Charles was a teacher in the village and was later appointed Superintendent of Schools.

Following this appointment he and his family moved to Alberton. The store business was sold again. this time, to J. Watson Fyfe on Aug. 7, 1909. Within twenty years the store business on the west side of the river had changed ownership four times. Sarah McMillan is registered as selling other small parcels of land along the river. The largest parcel of land 48 acres was sold

to Dr. R.D. McNeill.

ALEXANDER and SARAH had twelve children. Records do not indicate where each one settled. 1. Ewen b. 1864 John A. b. 1865
