SQUAREBRIGGS SQUAREBRIDGE SQUAREBRIGS
The Squarebriggs family emigrated from England to Prince Edward Island. They were seafar— ing families. The name can be found in various areas on the Island. In Stanley Bridge the fam— ily owned property on the East side of the river. Here they farmed and operated an importing and exporting store business. Henry Squarebriggs is thought to have been the first settler in this area. His son, James was involved in the store business with his father. Parcels of land were purchased from Dougald Henry, one on Dec. 31, 1873, and the second on Dec. 17, 1878. They sold the business to Daniel Ross, of Stanley Bridge, on April 14, 1886. With this sale the Squarebriggs family “sold yards, buildings, gardens, fences and commodities” for the sum of $2000.00. This Indenture was recorded by Dr. R. McNeill, J.P. for Queens C0.
When Mr. Ross retired from the store business he became the ‘silent partner’ with the A.J. MacLeod & Co. store. The prosperous business begun by the Squarebriggs families was said to have “everything from groceries to shoes, hats, or chinaware.” The last owner of the store
property, Mrs. Jessie Gehiere, had the store torn down.
A note of interest registered in the Registry Office, January, 1880 — seals p.93—94 states that “Henry James Squarebriggs has a Grant of shore privilege” Does this mean that access to a
shoreline has to be granted by Land Registry, but is not purchased by individuals? Henry Sr. and his wife sold this ‘Grant’ to Daniel Ross on April 14, 1886 for the sum of
$1000.00.
Henry Squarebridge Sr.{sp. }, Ship Master, arrived on Prince Edward Island on December 18, 1848, aboard his vessel the Brothers, which sailed out of Newfoundland. Other vessels of which Henry Sr. was Master, were the Elizabeth Ann, and the Leo. Records indicate that many trips were made from Prince Edward Island to the Miramichi, N.B. between the years 1848— 1862. Some records indicate that the Squarebriggs family may have lived in Miramichi, N.B., before settling on Prince Edward Island. As well as operating their large mercantile business the
