WEDLOCK The Wedlock family is thought to have come from England and settled in the Stanley district. They owned land about one mile to the east of the bridge, on Route 224. John Wedlock was a farmer, butcher, and store-owner. As well as being a storekeeper, John was a butcher and had a regular delivery route with the residents of widespread communities. This was one amazing accomplishment as John could not read or write. He could weigh meat so when John returned home in the evening, he verbally listed to his wife, Mary, the quantities purchased by each cus¬ tomer and she wrote it on paper. John Wedlock made his first two purchases of land in Stanley Bridge in 1872. The first was on Mar. 20, when he purchased 1 acre from Henry Warren , and the second on Dec. 30 for 4 acres of land from David Anderson . Another transaction was for 35 acres on Dec. 20, 1880 from John C. Clark . On May 24, 1884 he purchased a 'plot of land at Stanley' from Benjamin Rogers , and on Aug. 19, 1887 he secured 60 acres from George R. Garrett . In later years, John's son Everett, became the owner of 40 acres, and another son, Stanley, owned the 60 acres. By the mid 1930's, the A.E.L. Fyfe family owned all this land. After John Wedlock gave the business to his sons the store was known as Wedlock Bros . Dan, Stanley, and Everett operated the business. The store burned in the early 1900's. The Wedlock Bros , business ended before World War I began. Dan joined the Armed Forces and Stanley moved his family to . In 1912, Everett and his family moved to Hunter River . Here he continued with the shipping and slaughtering business in livestock, poultry and produce. Mary Wedlock 's brother, Robert Lamont , lived in the old house after Everett's move to Hunter River . The place of the Wedlock business still retains the name Wedlock's Corner. 344
