Brown , Esq. and his two boys were among the number and while fishing his son Willie and another boy about twelve years old, son of John Wedlock , butcher, started off skating across the river in the direction of Anderson's Point. Wedlock, being ahead, skated into a hole, the noise made by Willie Brown brought Mr. Brown and the rest of the children to the place, but, having nothing to save him, he perished and sank in four or five fathoms of water. A young man named John Steele , if allowed, would have gone in after him but it was considered unsafe. The people of Stanley turned out to search for the body and through the efforts of Mr. George Murphy , Captain D. Sutherland , and others, the body was found late in the evening. A coroner's inquest was immediately held by Dr. R. McNeill and the jury returned a verdict in accor¬ dance with the above facts.
