DR. JOHN SUTHERLAND b. Mar. 11, 1846 was born in Stanley Bridge, son of Alexander (1780—1852), formerly of the Parish of Fan, Scotland, and Catherine Campbell Sutherland, (1812—1899) formerly from Caithnesshire, Scotland.

Dr. Sutherland studied in the local school and received his Medical Degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1876. His first practice was in West Cape, but later moved to Bedeque. Past & Present Prince Edward Island by Warburton & McKinnon says that:

..... he has enjoyed a large and lucrative practice...... {he has} a deep and comprehensive knowledge of his profession and keeps in touch with the latest advances in the healing art...

This must have been quite an accomplishment for a person in a rural area to complete Medical studies or even travel from this area to the central United States to study Medicine.
